Chapter eight

Lizzy

Platon fastened the clasps on his black boots, his uniform once more sitting tight against his muscles. Under different circumstances, I would have asked for his number. But chances were my minutes couldn’t be used for a call to where he was going.

“There’s another English Muffin on the counter if you’re still hungry,” I said, coffee mug clasped in my hands.

“I’ll take a nutri-sphere once I’m back on my stargazer,” he said with a wink, placing his gun into his chest holster. “Seneca, the vessel I’m stationed at, is only two Earth hours from here.”

Each step he took to prepare for his departure landed in my stomach like a brick. Was I supposed to feel sad?

Platon was a Vetusian. A killer.

And yet I could shake that growing cleft at my core over the fact that he was leaving. Something I had begged him to do less than twenty-four hours ago, but now ached underneath my ribs.

He walked up to me and grabbed my mug, placing it on the counter before he took my hands into his. “Officer Platon. Say it.”

“Officer Platon.”

“Good. And the next one is just as important.” He stared deep into my eyes. “Second brigade, special intervention unit. Repeat.”

“Second brigade,” I said. “Special intervention unit.”

A smile came over his face. “Once we come, you will tell the first Vetusian with a scar above his temple that I’m your mate. He’ll have a language chip and understand you.”

“You never told me why you’re coming.”

“Because it’s classified,” he said and took me into his arms, a shadow coming over his face. “I don’t want to leave you, Lizzy. If it was up to me, I’d stay right here and be with you when the others arrive. But they’d strip my rank, and I’ll need it to provide well for you.”

That tightness in my chest again.

Before I managed to have a word in this mate thing, he clasped my face between his hands. “If something were to happen to me, you’ll receive my full pension once they confirm our link.”

“What do you mean? What link?” My voice came out high-pitched, that concern for a stranger lacking all sense. “Why do you say if something were to happen to you?”

“Sweet leska,” he said, his eyes narrowing into something so sharp I feared they’d cut me at my core. “It’s an invasion. Casualties are inevitable, and I might very well be one of them. But I’ll do whatever I can to return to you. Always.”

He held my gaze for a moment longer, then released me from his embrace. “Where do you want his body?”

“Um…” I grabbed my coffee mug once more, searching for the warm comfort of the glazed pottery. “You should probably take him. I watched enough CSI Miami to know it would make everything look even more suspicious. He’s been dead for too long, and we swept up the shards and all.”

Platon shook his head, hands planted on his hips. “I’ll dispose of him then.”

“Okay.”

“Okay…” He worried his bottom lip, his breath turning heavier, strained.
